This is the annual meeting for New Zealand general surgeons and surgical trainees from provincial and metropolitan hospitals. The conference theme for 2024 is “He Waka Eke Noa” We Are All In This Together.

Membership

Membership is open to all duly qualified surgeons who are recognised as and practice as Specialist General Surgeons. No restrictions shall be imposed on any person by virtue of religious or political beliefs, gender, nationality, race or age, but the Society shall have the right to refuse membership to any person without assigning any reason thereof.

NZAGS recognises Māori as Tangata whenua (people of the land) of New Zealand. NZAGS is committed to Indigenous health and places emphasis on the most appropriate and effective ways to achieve the vision of health equity, as well as increasing Indigenous representation in surgery and creating a surgical environment that is culturally safe and more relatable to Māori and Pacifica.

Education & Training

Training

NZAGS delivers General Surgery training through a Service Agreement with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). Governance of General Surgery training in New Zealand is administered by the Aotearoa New Zealand Committee in General Surgery (AONZCiGS).

New Zealand Association of General Surgeons

The New Zealand Association of General Surgeons is a membership based organisation of general surgeons throughout New Zealand. The principal functions of the Association are to represent the broad and collective interests of general surgeons particularly in the areas of vocational training, continuing professional development, workforce planning as well as acting as the interface between general surgeons, Government and components of the health sector generally.
