NZAGS Welcomes New President: Dr Bevan Jenkins
The New Zealand Association of General Surgeons (NZAGS) is delighted to announce the appointment of its new President, Dr Bevan Jenkins.
Dr Jenkins is a respected General Surgeon based in Te Matau-a-Māui | Hawke’s Bay, where he maintains a broad surgical practice and currently serves as Surgical Director at Hawke’s Bay Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. Originally from Te Atatū, Tāmaki Makaurau, Bevan is a graduate of the University of Auckland Medical School and brings with him a strong record of service and leadership across a number of healthcare organisations.
With more than eight years back in Hawke’s Bay following a fellowship year at the Royal Darwin Hospital, Dr Jenkins has become a key figure in the region’s surgical and clinical leadership. His deep understanding of both metropolitan and regional health settings offers a valuable perspective as NZAGS continues its mission to strengthen general surgery services nationwide.
Bevan is married to a General Practitioner, and together they share a commitment to health system leadership—each holding various governance and leadership roles. Their shared insight and support have proven invaluable in navigating the evolving challenges facing healthcare in Aotearoa.
Dr Jenkins takes up the presidency at a pivotal time for NZAGS. With a new Vice-President and CEO also stepping into their roles, the Association is entering a phase of renewed focus on advocacy, equity, and sustainable surgical service delivery. Bevan’s experience, values, and collaborative leadership style will be instrumental in advancing the interests of general surgeons and their patients across the country.
We warmly welcome Dr Jenkins to his new role and look forward to the impact of his leadership in the years ahead.
