Ms Michelle Locke is a Plastic Surgeon who holds a Senior Lecturer in Surgery appointment with the University of Auckland and is Head of Department at Middlemore Hospitals Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Burns Surgery. She trained at the University of Auckland School of Medicine and completed her advanced training in Plastic Surgery at various tertiary hospitals around New Zealand. During the course of her registrar training, she spent two years researching her thesis topic, “Mesenchymal stem cells and their use in Plastic Surgery”, at the School of Biological Sciences, which was submitted for her Doctorate of Medicine. After gaining her FRACS (Plastics), she undertook two years of sub-speciality Fellowship training in North America, including six months in Atlanta, USA followed by 18 months in Toronto, Canada. She returned to New Zealand in December 2011 and since that time has worked clinically at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland with a sub-speciality interest in breast reconstruction. She took over the role as Head of Department in August 2019, just four months prior to the Whakaari / White Island eruption.
She is married with two young girls. Outside of work, Michelle relaxing by spending time with her family and when Covid-19 allows, she enjoys travelling the world. She keeps fit by going to the gym and playing hockey.
