NZAGS Memberships

Membership is open to all duly qualified surgeons who are recognised as and practice as Specialist General Surgeons in New Zealand. No restrictions shall be imposed on any person by virtue of religious or political beliefs, gender, nationality, race or age, but the Society shall have the right to refuse membership to any person without assigning any reason thereof.

Membership of NZAGS ensures that there is a strong voice within the health industry for both general surgeons, general surgery, and patients.

The Association needs your support to ensure the smooth running of the General Surgery Training Programme, The NZ Board in General Surgery, The NZ Training Committee, the Annual Scientific Meetings, CPD requirements,  advocating within the insurance industry, workforce planning, and for the public of NZ.

The current full membership fee is: $575.00pa incl GST rolling twelve month basis (for 2023)

General – $575.00 pa
Associate Membership (non-resident surgeons or semi-retired) – $287.50 pa
Fully Retired – Free
Surgeon over 65 but still working – $287.50
NZ Resident Fellow Residing Short-term Overseas – FREE
NZAGS Trainee – $287.50 pa (taken out of the annual training fee paid)
Maternity/Paternity leave – $FREE

The fee is ratified yearly at the ASM held in March.

Membership of the Society will be by application. If you would like to join the Association, please fill out the Membership Application Form. You will need to create an Account first then click on the Application Form on your account landing page.

The office staff will review your application and send you an invoice. Once the invoice is paid you will be a member of NZAGS.

A Nationally Recognised Association

The New Zealand Association of General Surgeons is a membership based organisation of general surgeons throughout New Zealand. The principal functions of the Association are to represent the broad and collective interests of general surgeons particularly in the areas of vocational training, continuing professional development, workforce planning as well as acting as the interface between general surgeons, Government and components of the health sector generally.

The main activities of the Association include:

  • Annual Scientific Weekend meeting, usually held in March of each year
  • Selection for vocational training
  • Delivery of General Surgery vocational training
  • Representation and advocacy for general surgeons in their interaction with Government, DHBs, Medical Council of New Zealand and other healthcare and patient organisations
  • Newsletter for members
  • Regular updates on issues relevant to General Surgery in New Zealand for members through this website

Choose your membership type & lets start the process

  • General Membership is for Active Fellows who are those in independent specialist surgical practice which includes operative, specialist consulting, medico-legal practice and other specialist non-procedural and non-clinical work such as surgical administration and academia. This membership has voting rights.
  • Retired Membership will automatically apply to Fellows who turn 65 or 70 before the end of the subscription period. For all other categories the category conditions must exist for more than six months of the subscription period.
  • Retired Membership will also apply for Fellows who have ceased practicing all forms of medicine, surgery, medico-legal work and other specialist non-procedural and non-clinical work such as surgical administration and academia.
  • Associate/Trainee Membership is for those on the NZAGS General Surgical Training Programme and annual membership fee is taken out of your training fee. And for overseas surgeons who wish to be a non-voting member of NZAGS.
  • Overseas Membership is for NZ Fellows temporarily residing outside New Zealand and provides for a FREE membership. Overseas surgeon should apply for an Associate Membership.
  • The Executive Director may set individual special subscriptions to accommodate unusual circumstances including financial hardship, maternity/paternity leave, research fellowships etc.

  • For a subscription other than these, lodge a written application to the Executive Director NZAGS, PO Box 7451, Wellington 6242 or email a PDF document to us here
  • All applications must be on Fellow’s letterhead and include information on the changes in circumstance(s) that may lead to a variation to the subscription category.
